Swayambhunath Temple

It’s one of the destinations which speaks for itself! A UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with its own charisma. Swayambhunath Temple is one of the oldest temples which still stands today even after several earthquakes of 2015. Fondly called the “Monkey Temple” by the locals (as it’s thronged by monkeys all the time!) is a fascinating destination – a perfect ambigature of Hindu and Buddhist ideologies.

One of the perfectly crafted temples of Nepal, it is also the oldest temple. One can see the temple from a distance as the two eyes crafted out stare across the entire valley. Representing unity; it is a representation of Lord Buddha’s all – knowing and seeing eyes.

History & Present

There is a mythology attached with this temple, which has its own combinations! But the fact is once the entire area of the temple was filled with water. It is in this water that Lotus grew. And thus came out the name Self Created” or Swayambhu! It has been taken from the eternal flame of Hindus over which a STUPA was built. And thus what we see today is the huge massive Nepal architecture called Swayambhunath Temple.

This temple was constructed by great grandfather of King Vrsadeva at the beginning of 5th century. It is said Emperor Ashoka visited this temple

The Temple & Its Surroundings

The temple is a 13 tiered bee-hived structure with the white dome representing the earth and the top representing the 13 stages of human life. Prayer wheels with sacred Buddhist mantra “Mani Padme Hum” embossed on them make this place come to life. Thousands of prayer flags fill in the air with Buddhist prayers on them. At the base there are the statues of Dhyani Buddhas representing five basic qualities of Buddhist wisdom. Surrounded by religious stupas from all around – it’s simply altruistic!

The Eastern Side

If you are visiting the temple, then must visit the eastern side without fail! This side constructed by King Pratap Malla in 17th century, filled with monkeys – so watch your steps, glasses and the cameras! But there is more to it than just the monkeys. A beautiful collection of painted Buddha statues; bass – reliefs plus the stone showing birth of Buddha with mother Maya Devi. Spectacular vision!

Do get reading from the various fortune tellers here if you believe in astrology. On their side are lined up pairs of Garudas, elephants, horses, peacocks, lions – the vehicles of Dhyani Buddha.

It also houses the famous 6m high figure of Shakyamuni – the oldest form of Lord Buddha. Its good to be around this statue around 4 p.m. in the evening as a daily evening prayer is held with enormous sounds of honking horns and chants of Sanskrit sutras.

There are other things to see in the temple. It’s a huge structure – the entire place. Representing the 5 elements of nature – earth, fire, water, air and ether; the hill top of this temple is also a place to be in….

Chitwan National Park

Nepals’ Chitwan National Park also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Horned Rihno making it a proud home. Located in the park of Kasara, 13kms west of Sauraha bank of Rapti River; Chitwan National Park is home to several endangered wildlife species.

The main attractions of the park are Elephants and the Rhinos. Basically meaning “Heart of Jungle” it’s a thrilling place with crocodile filled marshed waters, dense waters and elephant safaris. There is also this hot boiling water spouts which take visitors by surprise. It’s good to be here in early hours as most of the activities of animals are carried out in the morning. Or else you can be here in the evenings. Afternoons are lazy.

Filled with host of wild animals like Bengal tiger, fishing cat, leopard cat, marbled cat, mongoose, golden jackals, Bengal foxes, honey badgers, striped hyenas, spotted linsangs, coated – otters, sambar deer, black naped hares, Gould’s sunbird, black chinned yuhina, blossom headed parakeet, slaty – breasted rail, Indian porcupines, flying squirrels, black neaped hares, endangered hispid hares, grass warblers, egrets, great spotted eagle, Eastern imperial eagle, brahminy ducks, Palla’s fish eagle and so on. its one of the most adventurous places of Nepal! Interestingly if you are here in early wee hours you are bound to see one of those sort – of smiling leopards and sloth – bears.

Elephant Breeding Centre

Inside the National Park there is an elephant breeding centre – a perfect place to say natural plays of baby elephants. See these cute babies playing in mud, sand and with their mothers – till the time you don’t intervene. Also see here how diligently elephant sweets are made out of molasses, salt and rice. To see the entire breeding centre one can either walk under the guidance of a guide or take a cycle along the road of Jungle Lagoon Safari Lodge. Be here at 6:00 a.m. to get the best experience of all times.

Jungle Safaris

Get a hour and half jungle ride on the back of elephant which runs here every day. These rides are early morning and late afternoon. Yes, of course there is that Jungle Jeep Safari too; but elephant are the best and magnificent. After all, who cares for the man – made machines when there are those beautiful creatures are there (till the time you behave properly with them!). The ride takes you through the canope of Rapti river.

This thrilling place is best for 2- 3 days to experience the sounds of cockoos and other wild birds n animals in wee hours. Thrill fills in with passing of every leopard and royal eagle. Wild flowers make your way and the happily playing little elephants in the warmth of their mothers make it a pleasant destination. Mobile networks can be a problem while on Jungle safaris. With more than 160 species of birds and 296 animals species; it’s a perfect place for nature lovers – especially in the winters!

Everest Base Camp

There are two ways one can look up at Nepal – the city and the sky high mountains. And it is this high mountain we are talking up. For some touching these sun – kissing mountains may seem to be an impossible task; but for those having their adrenalin running high; Everest climbing can be life – time achievement.

The stunning view of Mount Everest, Sherpas passing by, Thyangboche Monastery giving a peep into Buddhist cultureand eco campsites are some of the main attractions of these walk up high the mountains.

Everest Base Trip

Generally it’s a 18 – 25 days trip all along the way up high which surpasses your expectations. The trail towards Everest begins from villages – Namche and Khumjung . Namche village is the gate of Sagamartha National Park. On walking through the gates one reaches the confluence of two highly rushing rivers – Kosi and Bhote Kosi. It leads to horse shoe shaped peak of Kongde Ri. It’s a good place to look for local shopping things!

Stopping here for a day presents a peep into the daily life of sherpas and how they survive in extreme weather conditions. Seeking Yak, yalk butter and milk is a common sight here. Tasting these can be a different experience.

The road from here leads to Deboche trek. It also happens to be the most beautiful treks around. It passes through rhododendron forests where one can see musked deer, pheasents and himalayan thar moving around un-harmed. The route from these two villages leads to Thyangboche Monastery. Interestingly this place a good mix of Sherpa culture and Buddhist ideology! Upon reaching here one can get a brief of this mixed culture which also has bits of Tibetan Buddhism. The route from here leads to Dingboche from where one can see the trans view of Everest. Massive glaciers can be seen from here. One can also get good views of Cholaste and Lobuche peaks, the path leading to Khumbu glacier.

Just below the Khumbu Glacier there is small village called Gorak Shep. Khumbu is the world’s highest peak. This glacier leads the path towards Kalla Patthar or Black Rock; from her towards Dingboche peak. Here at Dingboche one can also see the sun setting in at Lhotse, Nuptse and Chhukung peak. And this is the highest point of Everest till the place one can reach. Above than this it’s for the professional and trained trekkers to take the path. On reaching Dingboche you can find many traveller’s resting here. It’s a turn back from here. Moving towards Deboche, Namche, Ghat , Lukla and lastly to Kathmandu we finish our Everest Base Camp trekking.

Views on the entire path towards Everest are spectacular; so keep your lenses ready and that extra pack of battery with you. Many of the travellers feel restlessness or shortage of breath, but there are small oxygen cylinders for them. Glaciers can happen at higher points and one needs to be physically as well as mentally prepared for these. Rest is a memorable chapter which one takes home, smiling and fondly!

Lumbini

There is more than this place to being the Birthplace of Lord Buddha and being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a place where the Buddhist viharas /monasteries and stupas of 15th century A.D. still stand tall today. (However after the earthquake of 2015, some of them have been damaged. Its presence is has lot of religious importance not only for local people but also globally. Situated under the foothills of Himalaya; it’s one of the most beautiful places of world to be in!

Lord Buddha was born here in 563 B.C. ; named as Sidhhartha Gautama and so a lot of Buddhist and non – Buddhist disciples come here from around the globe. Located just 22 kms of Bhairawa; there is the beautiful temple of Maya Devi – mother of Gautam Buddha. Being here in Lumbini means not only going on a spiritual ride; but also seeing around 36 places which are of importance. A stay of 2 – 3 days is must to see and dip in the entire place.

Maya Devi Temple

It’s the place or the tree under which Lord Buddha was born. It is said Maya Devi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha while on her way to her parental home Devadaha while resting under a Sal tree and it is much revered. But seeing this place comes at a cost and one needs to buy a ticket to enter. There is a small pond here called Puskarni. It’s a pious pool where Maya Devi took a dip before giving birth to the Lord. This too is much revered.

Myanmar Gold Temple

One of the oldest yester-years structures, it has three impressive prayer halls. One the top of these there is this corn – cobbed shikara – something replicating temples of Began. There is also the Burmese styled Lokmani Pula Pagoda which is another impressive architectural structure.

World Peace Pagoda

It’s a beautiful place not because about US $1 MILLION HAS BEEN INFUSED INTO IT to construct it; but simply because the place has really been very well built. Sit here in silence and feel the peace and place. The huge sparkling and smiling statue of Lord Buddha does makes its presence felt. Be here and feel the difference.

Ashokan Pillar

Emperor Ashoka did make is presence felt here when he visited Lumbini and till today it can be seen. Everywhere there is something which speaks of Buddha, if you look closely. On the distant view there is this Ashokan Pillar with original inscriptions on it.

Lumbini Crane Sanctuary

Even if you are not interested in those high walking silent cranes; still you should be here. The best time is to be here in the early morning and get the rarest sights. See them walking, talking, shrieking, taking a flight of heaven and gripping their diet in a flash of a second. It’s as amusing and as thrilling as you can imagine.

Drubgyud Choling Gompa

Unlike others this Gompa is not one of the oldest. Rather it’s a recent one built in 2001 with fantastic mural work, well defined relics and a gigantic stupa which is as beautiful as others are. Spending some time here in the morning hours or evenings can be memorable.

Around Pokhara

  • World Peace Pagoda:

It’s the place where every Buddhist comes to seek the blessings of the Lord. Standing on the narrow ridge above Phewa Tal; it’s one of the most beautiful architectural pieces around. It was basically designed and constructed by Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji organization and has got lot of gold work in it. While visiting this place do not forget to take your camera!

  • International Mountain Museum:

Be here to know how it’s been for the climbers or mountaineers up the hill. Dedicated to mountains and mountaineers; it’s a place which tells you how it’s being a mountaineer!

  • Devil’s falls:

The falls fall and make people shout with happiness. Get an extra pack of clothing to dip in the silver water falling from high up the mountains. Sip a coffee, click pics and spend your evening here. It’s definitely refreshing.

  • Tibetan Settlements:

It’s the kind of place where Tibetan refugee settlements make their presence. It’s also a way to understand how Tibetan’s live their lives on day to day basis. Four Tibetan settlements make their presence here – Jampaling, Paljorling, Tashi Ling and Tashi Palkhel. Each of them have their own Gompa, Chorten and way of living!

  • Old Pokhara or Purano Bazar:

Looking to go for some shopping. Go to Purano Bazar and shop till the sun sets in! If you have energies left; then you can also shop for some more time – even after the sun has set in! Local and international food shops make for the rest.

  • Lake Phewa:

This small beautiful lake is considered the best place for fishing, paragliding, hiring pedalos and taking a bike ride around. It offers very pleasant view especially in the later-half of the day. Several coffee shops are there to spend a lazy and relaxed afternoon or evening. Take a ride up the hill towards Sarnagkot for the best Bike ride of your life.

Pokaha is a bustling city with a mix of new and old culture. A mix of community of Khas and Gurung mark their presence here in day to day life. Being in Pokhara means not just being here for a few days; but making a beginning to come back here – again and again…

Patan and Durbar City Square

One of the 3 royal cities of old Nepal, Patan is also one of the largest cities of present day. Located across Bagmati river near Kathmandu; it’s a place which is the proud owner of once famous Durbar Square. Full of temples, palaces and beautiful squares; it’s a beautiful city to be a part of! (Incidentally Durbar Square the UNESCO World Heritage Site was badly damaged in the recent earthquake of 2015).

Around the Durbar City Square

Although much damaged in the recent earthquake, yet there are structures which still stand tall and can be considered as most beautiful pieces of architecture. Seeing them is a experience of different kind; watching them closely is a life-time memory.

  • Kumbheshwar Temple:

It’s a pagoda temple with two sections. Each section is five storied with its sunken basin filled every year on the day of Kumbheshwar Mela/fair.

  • Golden Temple:

Its one of the priceless honour of Nepal. Loaded with gold and silver decorations all around and intricately carved bronze temple; it’s a unique experience. Dating back 1400 years; it’s one of the places which cannot be missed out!

  • Mahaboudha Temple:

Basically a stone temple filled with terracotta tiles with 1008 Lord Buddha images. It took four generations of a single family to complete this structure.

  • Rudravarna Mahavihar:

Also known as Uku Bahal; it is one of the oldest temple in Kathmandu city and so the architecture is quite interesting.

All the above temples are located inside the Durbar Square. Patan’s Durbar square was first built in 1734 and was the official residence of Malla rulers. Inside the square one can see lined up large courtyards on one side and temples lined up on the other side. There is also a Museum called

Keshab Narayan Chowk

It is one of the best places to know more about the architecture and designing of Nepal. Its ages old and perfectly represents how things would have been in the olden days. There is a fee to enter the Museum which is on reduced rates for residents of SAARC countries.

Other structures which ought to be seen include Octagonal Krishna Temple (1647), big bell (1737), Shankar Narayan Temple, old temple complex(1566), Bhimsen temple (1680), Vishwanath temple with 2 beautiful elephants and a stone temple of Lord Krishna with most amazing stonework on it.

There is more to Patan than the Durbar Square. Patan is also one of the best places in Nepal to shop. So, get on the streets of Patan to buy some of the most exquisite things. Pashupatinath Temple

Located on the banks of river Bagmati River in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal; Pashupatinath got the Grace of God when it went almost unharmed given the range of earthquake hit the roads of valley. Scientific reasons say it happened due to its bricks being held together by strong metal sheets in its roof; people having faith in God, it’s all his work! Whatever the reason; being here offers the kind of peace and serenity which less places in the world do!

Unesco World Heritage Site

Consider this: There are 12 Jyotirlingas (of Hindu Lord Shiva) in India. Pashupatinath is the head of Lord Shiva. It is one of the main reasons why it is so much revered by Hindus all over the world. For others, it’s the architecture and design which calls for them. The temple includes sections of Ram Temple from 14th century and the famous Guhyeshwari Temple of 11th century manuscript on it. In fact the presence of Pashupatinath dates back to 400 A.D. and so its architecture is definitely a charm amongst its visitors.

Temple and its Complex

The beautiful temple has the main idol is a stone Mukhalinga with silver serpent over it. The lingam has its face in all four directions. They represent Sadyojata, Vamdeva, Tatpursha, Aghor And Ishana aspects of Lord Shiva. The entire temple is beautifully carved with cubic design and wooden rafters. The roofs are made up of copper and gold plating. The temple has a Garbhagraha with outer one plated with gold and inner one has the idol of the lord Shiva placed in it.

There are two sections – inner and outer side.

  • The inner sections

consists of Vasukinath, Surya, Kirthi Mukh Bhairav, hanuman shrine, 184 shivaling shrine, bundanil kantha shirne and unmatta bahirav temple.

  • The outer section

consists of Ram mandir, Virat swaroop mandir, 12th Jyotirlinga and Guhyeshwari temple. The entire temple can be seen from four different sides – from river side, from main entrance, bagami river where cremations are carried out and the backyard. It easily takes 4 – 5 hours to see the entire temple in a considerable street. Being here means dressed up in fully covered hands and legs dress. Jeans and short tops are not allowed at any cost. One has to keep their belongings outside the temple including the hand purse and leather belts.

Pashupatinath is also famous for the last rites of Hindus which are carried out here. The main festival celebrated here is Shivaratri. Lakhs of devotees each year come to seek the blessings of the Lord.

*Mainly Hindus are allowed inside the temple complex and not people of any other culture. Sikhs and Jains if they are from India are permitted if they are of India or are of Indian descandents.

Timings

The morning pujas are done from 5 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 5p.m. 7 p.m. for evening aarti. Visitors are not allowed to enter the inner –most circle but they can see the aarti from outer section. Entering the temple means being your hands and legs decently covered. Jeans and short tops are not allowed under any circumstance. One has to deposit things like hand-purse, leather belt and cameras before entering the pious place.

Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes are more adventurous than just being a place. Nestling in the Sagarmatha National Park of Nepal these are more beautiful than words can say. Located high at an altitude of 16,400 ft above the sea level; it’s a good trekking up there. Gokyo Lakes are honoured of being the world’s highest freshwater lake with 6 lakes mixing up – Thonak being the largest.

There are two pint of view to this lake. One is religious with thousands of Buddhist and Hindus reviving it. Second is adventure. Trekkers come here to enjoy trekking all the way up. Being on the Himalayan Glacier trekking range; it’s the Nepal’s biggest glacier point.

The Treks of Gokyo Lakes

The arch of the snow – mountains can be seen from miles much before you reach Goyko. An exceptionally charismatic mountains it has more than 7000 visitors every winters. For those who cannot make to everest base camp because of its extreme weather conditions can easily take a climb to goyko lakes. . The trek takes up the route to Sansa – exactly what it takes in the beginning of Everest Base Camp route reaching Ngozumpa Glacier. Passing through Namche market and Machhermo one reaches Gokyo Lakes. Here what you can see is the beautiful shapes of clouds, blue azure sky, turquoise mountain lakes and the silent surroundings. It’s more than just beautiful.

The entire trek is neither very easy nor very tough. Rather it’s good for those who have breathing problems or are not really good at trekking. A comparatively smooth and easy walk up the hill; it’s a good trek – popular amongst the tourists /travellers.

Best Time to be Gokyo Lake

Although the best time to be here is September to December in winters and March to May in summers; yet it depends entirely upon the travellers which one they opt for. If you are coming here for trekking then be here in the beginning of March or beginning of September to get the best view. This adventure tour of Gokyo Lakes is one of the most popular one amongst the travellers. The off- beaten treks, sparkling water lakes, Sherpas walking with their herds, alpine campsites, beautiful panoramas, tranquil paths perfectly blended scenic beauty of earth and sky and the mountains which surrounds the valley is something which one can expect in this trail. It’s more than just a natural beauty!

Annapurna Circuit

They say it is a back-packers circuit filled with thrill and adventure. It’s the one which everyone can take – even a person who wishes to spend as little as INR 1000 per day with mere basic requirements! (Well that’s for college boys; if we are speaking very frankly!). Interestingly, it is one of the best treks around the globe – this 17 – 21 days long trek. What makes this circuit unique is the full – fledged presence of flora, fauna, small lakes and of course the high rising mountain cliffs smiling at its visitors!

This area is basically dominated by Tibetan Buddhist people and crosses over four regions – Lamjung, Manang, Mustang and Myagdi.

The Trek of Annapurna Circuit

The trek begins from Marsyandi Valley which takes you across a small cross – over. From here it reaches the Thorong La pass slowly moving around Annapurna massif. On the way you will be welcomed by prayer flags, small hermits, barren landscapes and beautiful valley. As you trek the path, keep on collecting the beautiful scenes in your cameras. This called the easy trek is often called the easy trek is filled with lush greenery in the beginning and as one crosses the green path one reaches the barren lands and high mountains. The excellent views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri offer amazing scenes.

Soon after one crosses the Thorong La Pass one can see the sub – tropical alpine peaks and also an arid semi – desert which is a direct contrast between the lush greenery and high peaks. It is in this trek that one can find the beautiful small village’s inhabitated by locals. These locals follow either Buddhism or Hinduism. Small hermit houses and tea – houses can be found in this trek making it a unique experience – which cannot be found in any other trek of the world! Stones with carved paintings, snow treks, old monasteries, red coloured trees with snow loaded peaks in the background and 7 – 8 tired layered fields are the common sights of these path. From here one reaches the Tapta Pani or Hot water. Some people believe it has got medicinal values and so take a dip in it before moving further. You too can if you wish so.

The return path is across villages of Ghara, Shika, Birethanthi and Pokhara. From Pokahar is a drive back to Kathmandu. On reaching Kathmandu, it’s good to take a 1 – 2 days rest and explore heritage sites like Temple of Pashupatinath, Bodhnath Stupa and the local market. Buying souvenirs on the way back too is a idea.

*For this kind of trek one can expect accommodations, food inclusive and travel insurance. In fact, if you are not getting these, then there is no point of taking the trek. Taking along your medicines is a good idea. This trek is not at a very high altitude as compared to other treks and so there are NO breathing problems as such. A guided tour is a must as an individual trek without any guidance can be fatal…. March to May is the best time to be here.

Bardiya National Park

Bardia is considered one of the most well – protected natural area of Nepal. It is also the biggest out of the 7 National Parks Nepal has got. Developed to protect the natural eco-system; it conserves tigers and elephants in its reserve. Filled with various flora and fauna; it has got a good range of animals like Tiger, Swamp deer, Gharial Crocodile, Gangetic Dolphin, Bengal Florican and so on. To see all these; there is only one thing required – to see them in silence in their natural homes…..

There is more this natural park then just the animals. There is also the Crocodile, Rhinoceros and Elephant Breeding centre inside.

Crocodile, Rihno and Elephant Breeding Centre

Wish to get close up with big beasts – crocodile and small cute beings the turtles. Then here it is – Bardia National Park has a breeding section where you can get real close to these beings. There is different section for rhinoceros if you wish to look at them closely. Basically a silent creature; it does no harm if one interacts with them within their limit.

It’s really good to be here in early hours to see them all or all of them. This means one needs to be here around 6: 00 a.m. IST. For elephants be here anytime between 10: 00 – 4:00 when they are finished off having their food and are in playful mood. See the little one playing amongst themselves or with their mothers. Wildlife of Bardia

There are around 150 species of reptiles and fishes; 400 species of birds and 48 species of wild animals in the entire place. The main attractions include Gangetic Dolphins, Royal Bengal Tiger, Rihnoceros, Black Buck, Gharial Crocodile, Swamp Deer, Indian Elephant, Bengal Florican, Silver Eared Mesia,Sarus Crane and Lesser Florican.
